A True God-Fearing Politician

Victories for democrats in Texas are hard to come by, but not so for our very own Richard Raymond.  He's been racking up wins left and right.  In 2007, Raymond successfully passed a motion to put the words "In God We Trust" in the Texas House chamber.  In 2013 he won again with the Christmas bill, which let Texas school officials and staff recognize Christmas without consequence.

On Thursday (June 11) Raymond scored another victory when Governor Greg Abbott signed Raymond's license plate bill.  The bill will direct DMV staff to create license plates with the words "In God We Trust."  Proceeds from those plates will go to help veterans.

Press release below:

AUSTIN – Representative Richard Peña Raymond (Laredo), Chairman of the House Committee on Human Services, joined Governor Greg Abbott at the Capitol for a bill signing ceremony for HB 315, the "In God We Trust" specialty license plates bill passed by Chairman Raymond. Any revenues that are collected from the sale of these specialty license plates will be given to the Texas Veterans Commission to assist Veterans.

"I want to thank Governor Greg Abbott for having this bill signing ceremony. I passed this bill for two reasons: it would allow Texans to display our national motto and their belief in God in a meaningful way and it would help Veterans who have fought so many wars to protect our rights to those beliefs," said Rep. Raymond.

HB 315 instructs the Department of Motor Vehicles to create a specialty plate with the words “In God We Trust.” After administrative costs, all proceeds will go to the Texas Veterans Commission, which acts as the official advocate for Texas Veterans as they seek their rightfully earned benefits.

In 2007, Representative Raymond passed a bill to put "In God We Trust" in the House of Representatives Chamber. "I believe it's important to never forget that this simple phrase is so powerful, because it brings people together and reminds us of our common purpose," added Representative Raymond. HB 315, takes effect upon the Governor’s signing.

Representative Richard Peña Raymond represents House District 42, which is entirely in the city of Laredo. Rep. Raymond chairs the Human Services Committee and is a member of the powerful Texas Sunset Advisory Commission and is former Vice-Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.
