City Council could vote today to approve several components of City Manager Carlos Villarreal’s 2011-2012 fiscal year budget.
Here's an interesting part:
Villarreal will also ask for approval of fee increases for maquinita or eight-liner gambling machines. Annual permitting fees will jump from $250 to $350 per machine.Sure the maquinitas are a revenue stream for the city, but it's one that encourages gambling and uses valuable police time and money to monitor. Why permit these establishments to function when they are going to be busted, at least one per month?
Let's see if I have this correct: city collects money; money used to take trips to D.C.; city leaders lobby for federal money for first responders; first responders patrol (undercover) gambling establishments which the city collects money on; city grants permits for eight-liners again.
