After spending half a month at a halfway house in Laredo, a former Laredo police chief convicted of accepting bribes as a part of a maquinitas corruption scandal will be released today after serving a 36-month federal prison sentence.
It was nearly three years ago that we here at LaSanbe selected Chief Dovalina as Person of the Year for his involvement in the 8-liner scandal. In the time that he's been away, countless busts have taken place to crack down on those who continue to promote gambling. City hall, however, has done nothing to bring about real change for the city.
Today Mr. Dovalina will be a free man. He has done his time. But just as he was getting ready to complete his sentence, two others were being introduced to the penal system. KGNS reports on the actions of two young men:
The number of 8-liner stings will never catch up to the number of drug busts, prostitution round-ups or thefts, but the money will continue to flow as long as there is someone that succumbs to greed.
