A Piece Of Laredo History

Here's an excerpt from a documentary that recounts the story of the triple ax murder that occurred in the early 1990s.

Narrator:  The night between the 18th and 19th of January in 1991, the police in Laredo made a gruesome discovery.  In a luxury home they found the bodies of three people brutally murdered in their sleep.  One of the victims turned out to be James Smiley, a businessman and highly respected member of the local Baptist church.

One of the persons prosecuted for the murders was Miguel Angel Martinez.  He made this statement:

NarratorI, Miguel Martinez, make the following statement in writing.  Me and Miguel Venegas went to Smiley's house on Thursday night.  Venegas had an ax and a black knife.  I carried the folding knife.  I thought the house was empty.  Venegas went in first and said a guy was on the couch.  We went back out and I told him, "let's split."  He said no because Satan wanted their souls.

He went back in and hit him once in the head with the ax.  Venegas first poked him with the knife and then I.  Venegas crossed into the other room and stabbed the kid.  I told him I was freaking out.  He said I'll take care of it, give me the ax.  I gave it to him and walked out of the house.
