Webb Co. Hires Engineering Firm

In yesterday's edition of the LMT we learned that Dannenbaum Engineering Corp. was hired by Commissioners Court to develop plans for work to be done on Bob Bullock Loop.  (In a thread that I posted Wednesday, two readers informed us that Dannenbaum had gotten the contract)  The LMT's Zach Lindsey writes:
The court approved Dannenbaum in a 4-0 vote, with little discussion.  No amount for the contract has been specified because it would need to be negotiated, said County Engineer Fitzgeraldo Sanchez.
The court's decision has obviously come under fire because of the ties that Dannenbaum has with several commissioners.
Dannenbaum Engineering, the firm's political action committee, plus the firm's chairman, James Dannenbaum, and his wife, Shirley, contributed $15,500 to Commissioner Frank Sciaraffa, $5,000 to Commissioner Jerry Garza and $1,500 to Commissioner Rosaura "Wawi" Tijerina, according to campaign finance reports available through April 3.
Apparently this is all legal.
No rules prohibit commissioners who receive contributions from an individual or entity from voting on matters involving contracts with that individual or entity.
That may be true, but it looks fishy.
Tijerina, Sciaraffa and Garza said the campaign contributions were nonissues when it comes to awarding contracts.
In other words, nothing to see here.
