It Gets Worse

Martin High arrests raise red flags

Several Martin High students were arrested Friday, including one for assaulting a teacher, Laredo Independent School District officials said.

“We’re very concerned because there are a few students at Martin who are causing disruptions for the students who are there to learn,” said LISD spokeswoman Veronica Castillon.

Not only is my alma mater at stage 5 and in danger of being taken over by the state because of poor academic performance, now we get word that the students are just too unruly and instructors are at their wits end.
Among the problems teachers have reported are students urinating in stairwells, pulling fire alarms, throwing firecrackers, stealing and tossing milk cartons, and cussing out educators.
My better half is astounded by how bad things have gotten at our old school.  She even wants to form a committee to see if it can intervene and possibly help matters.  Just the other day a small fire was started after one student lobbed fireworks to the roof of one building.  Crime Stoppers representative Estela Quintanilla doesn't think that we should over-react.
"I don't really see a difference from any other year.  If (the students) really were malicious, they would have burned it down already."
Yeah, a little arson isn't something to get bent out of shape over.

Students and staff seriously think that more should be done about discipline, and security at Martin High.  If teachers and security guards feel threatened at their place of work, then something needs to be done.  We really should stop using the phrase, "The children are our future," if we're going to let them run amok.  Martin H.S. administrators are going to have to buckle down in more ways than one.
